re: Chapter 16 - The Savage Gully

Chapter 16

The Savage Gully

4 Years Ago - Aldmeri Isles, Auridon

Ri'shai took in the breeze that came in from the island's ocean air. It smelled of reunion to her. A strange sensation, a feeling of purpose. Perhaps it was a message from Mafala that tonight's works would be magnificent ones.

She layed prostrate upon the Cliffside overhanging what was now called Toothmaul Gully. It's original name had been changed according to Mcswine. The place was supposed to be the Altmer's attempt at enslaving goblins.

Ri'shai knew as much as anyone else about Goblins. That they were smelly, violent, and best avoided. The mer sure were brazen, too think they could tame such rabble.

According to Mcswine, this mine had been worked by the goblins for three whole cycles now. However reports of late had come in that the gully had been in upheaval for some weeks. What did that mean for Dro'kin Dar'kir? Surely the father possessed the strength of his sons.

They had to believe he was still alive.

Mcswine was not hopeful for the old man. He said that the place was considered a death trap. After the goblins gained control of the central mining shaft, all of the altmer slave-masters were forced to evacuate.

Apparently the goblins hadn't fled, but instead decided to inhabit the mines permanently. Mcswine had speculated that the goblins would be running out of supplies soon. Which meant the goblins would be forced to start foraging outside of the mine.

Ri'shai hung her head over the cliff. Far below, illuminated by the light of jone and jode, sat a few mining carts and tools. Presumably the gully broke into the mountainside directly beneath her.

"This one has a plan," Ri'shai said.

Tolan lay beside her, similarly peering toward the rubble below. He turned his head to meet Ri'shai's gaze.

"Ahhh jyess the talented Ri'shai believes herself a master tactician no?" Tolan said, giving her an endearing grin. "We meant to speak to you before Ri'shai, you will act as our lookout tonight."

Ri'shai bit back her first contort. "This one sees, so you and Faradin will retrieve old man Dro'kin without Ri'shai?"

"Well, yes, this one thinks that goblins should give us no worries, we must make haste however, old man Dro'kin may be dead by now."

Faradin, laying on the other side of Tolan, gave a sharp growl. "You don't know that brother. This one does not appreciate your lack of hope."

Tolan said nothing in reply, he simply gave his brother one of his false grins. Ri'shai found it ponderous that Faradin would feel so strongly about his father. Tolan didn't seem to care much. Tolan had a hook through his jaw. The hook was his father. Tolan wanted to be free of his bonds.

Perhaps Faradin had cared more for their father? They had obviously abandoned him. Why would one son feel more strongly than the other?

"So what will you say when you save him?" Ri'shai asked.

Tolan and Faradin both turned their heads.

"Tolan does not know sister. Tolan barely remembers his fur-father." Tolan replied.

Faradin said nothing, he just turned his head once more to peer at the cave entrance below.

"Faradin?" Ri'shai asked

"This one has not thought about it," Faradin replied.

Ri'shai could hear the lie on his lips. Something had his fur on end. He was growing with anger and she could see it. After a moment Faradin lifted himself to his feet.

"Mafala bless us in this endeavor, " Faradin Said. Shadows began to leap from the forest behind. Forming into his hands.

Tolan followed Faradin's demeanor, lifting himself to his feet. "May shadow's hide our blades until they find out foes throats." Shadow's danced from nearby underbrush, each pouring into Tolan's hands.

"Mafala see our murder be white," Faradin said. The night began to trace over his fur.

"May fear and weakness dissolve and float away upon the ocean's winds." Tolan said, a deep darkness moving across his torso, his white fur obscured by blackness.

"Mafala free our bonds from those who would chain us," Faradin said. His voice contorted by shadow magic.

"May the taste of blood find our enemies lips. May the broken be renewed upon the red death of our web," Tolan said. His voice wreathed in shadow. Each word seemingly channeled through the roar of a fire.

The two brothers took steps back, each summoning a single shadow spike into their hands. They each lifted their arms high, spikes growing longer. They struck down into cliff side. Planting the spike hard into the soil. It sank several feet.

Each of them lifted there hand away, but a shadow seemed to still be pouring from their hands. They stepped toward the cliff side. Their bodies completely cloaked in darkness. Bestial forms of shadow, wreathing, and terrible. They jumped from the cliff side.

Ri'shai rushed to the edge. A length of black rope extended from each of the spikes, leading to two spiderling like shadow's descending the cliff side.

Looking down, She heard something, a whisper upon the wind. Ri'shai gathered her will. It seemed to say go.

She pulled upon the ocean's breeze. They want me to keep lookout, Ri'shai will show them how much of a lookout she can be, no?

Ri'shai summoned a great gust, and held it beneath her form. She lept from the cliff side. The gust bellowing beneath Ri'shai keeping her descent slow. She smiled, realizing her kha'jiiti brethren would be furious.

Descending into the gully below. Full of savage goblins. She found she was not afraid. Fear was a far away feeling. She had her kin to protect, and Mafala's eyes upon her.
